in october 1962, the world was brought to the brink of nuclear war when america confronted the soviet union over its decision to install ballistic missiles in cuba. president kennedy made very plain his nation's determination to have the offending weapons removed. "i guess," he observed at the height of the crisis, "this is the week i earn my salary."
after several days of worldwide tension, the soviet premier khrushchev finally ordered a withdrawal, bringing an end to the so-called cuban missile crisis. "we were eyeball to eyeball," us secretary of state dean rusk remarked, "and the other fellow just blinked."

一 九 六 二 年 十 月 ， 苏 联 决 定 在 古 巴 设 置 弹 道 飞 弹 ， 美 国 马 上 横 眉 相 向 ， 核 子 战 争 一 触 即 发 。 甘 乃 总 统 表 明 ， 美 国 一 定 要 除 去 这 些 讨 厌 的 武 器 。 他 在 局 势 最 危 急 的 时 候 说 ： 「 国 家 给 我 薪 水 ， 大 概 就 是 为 这 个 星 期 的 工 作 。 」
那 几 天 ， 全 球 气 氛 紧 张 。 最 后 ， 苏 联 总 理 赫 鲁 雪 夫 下 令 撤 去 飞 弹 ， 结 束 了 这 场 世 人 所 谓 古 巴 飞 弹 危 机 。 美 国 国 务 卿 安 ． 腊 斯 克 说 ： 「 我 们 彼 此 怒 目 相 视 ， 对 方 先 眨 眼 睛 。 」
【 附 注 】 eyeball 是 「 眼 球 」 ， eyeball to eyeball 指 彼 此 瞪 对 方 ， 一 般 怀 有 挑 衅 含 意 ， 加 上 连 字 号 （ hyphen ） 就 成 为 形 容 词 ， 例 如 ： he was dismissed after an eyeball-to-eyeball confrontation with his boss （ 他 和老 板 彼 此 瞪 目 对 抗 之 后 ， 被 辞 退 了 ） 。
怒 目 相 视 的 对 抗 之 中 ， 先 眨 眼 者 算 是 落 败 。 outstare 就 是 「 瞪 对 方 直 到 对 方 先 眨 眼 睛 」 ， 例 如 腊 斯 克 可 以 说 ： we outstared the russians 。
