george clark (1752-1818), one of the noted american military heroes, was fifty-seven when he fell into the fireplace in his humble cabin, burning one leg so badly that it had to be amputated. he was taken to louisville for the operation. no anaesthetic was available then.
to distract the patient, the commander of the local kentucky militia paraded his command outside the room where clark lay and marched them round and round the building, with fifes tootling and drums banging away. while the surgeon sawed off the limb and sealed the wound with a red-hot iron, clark tapped his fingers in time to the sound of his memories. when the operation was over, he turned to the surgeon and asked, "well, is it off ?"

乔 治 ． 克 拉 克 （ 1752-1818 ） 是 美 国 着 名 军 事 英 雄 ， 五 十 七 岁 那 年 ， 在 他 简 陋 的 小 屋 ， 失 足 掉 进 壁 炉 ， 一 条 腿 严 重 烧 伤 ， 必 须 切 除 ， 被 送 到 路 易 维 尔 接 受 手 术 。 那 时 没 有 麻 醉 剂 。
为 了 分 散 他 的 注 意 力 ， 当 地 肯 塔 基 民 兵 司 令 在 克 拉 克 躺 的 房 间 外 检 阅 部 队 ， 叫 他 们 不 住 的 绕 那 栋 建 筑 物 列 队 行 进 ， 一 路 吹 横 笛 打 军 鼓 。 克 拉 克 听 到 往 日 惯 听 的 乐 声 ， 一 面 用 手指 打 拍 子 ， 一 面 让 医 生 把 腿 锯 去 ， 并 用 炽 热 烙 铁 按 在 切 口 上 。 手 术 完 毕 后 ， 他 转 头望 医 生 说 ： 「 嗯 ， 锯 去 了 吗 ？ 」
【附 注 】 command 除 了 解 作 「 命 令 」 ， 还 可 以 指 「 所 统 率 的 部 队 」 ， 例 如 ： the general led his command into battle （ 将 军 率 领 部 队 上 战 场 ） 。 fife 是 军 乐队 的 横 笛 ， tootle 则 是 拟 声 字 ， 指 发 出 嘟 嘟 声 。
