the attack on the french city of quebec in 1759 required the british to navigate a difficult passage of the st lawrence river. the local pilot felt it was an impossible task. captain killick aboard the leading transport goodwill angrily pushed the pilot aside and went forward to the forecastle to guide the ship through himself.
leaning over the bow the ancient man gave his orders easily, noting the different shades of blue and grey that indicated the depth of the water, and warning of submerged ridges marked by talltale ripples. eventually goodwill emerged into easier water. "well, damn me if there are not a thousand places in the thames more hazardous than this, " killick snorted.

一七 五 九 年 ， 英 军 进 侵 法 国 的 魁 北 克 市 ， 须 乘 船 闯 过 圣 劳 伦 斯 河 一 段 险 流 。 当 地 导 航员 认 为 这 是 无 法 办 到 的 。 领 队 运 输 舰 古 德 威 尔 号 船 长 基 利 克 愤 然 把 导 航 员 推 开 ， 走到 船 楼 上 ， 亲 自 导 航 。
这 老 家 伙 在 船 头 俯 身 望 河 道 ， 指 挥 若 定 ， 凭 河 水 或 深 或 浅 旳 蓝 色 、 灰 色 判 断 水 深 ， 见 水 面 涌 起 不 寻 常 微 波， 就 警 告 其 下 有 凸 起 岩 石 。 古 德 威 尔 号 终 于 过 了 那 段 险 流 。 基 利 克 说 ： 「 哼 ， 泰 晤士 河 有 一 千 处 比 这 段 河 道 还 要 危 险 。 」
英 军 占 领 魁 北 克 ， 基 利 克 导 航 之 功 不 可 抹 杀 。
【附 注 】 ancient 除 了 解 作 「 古 代 的 」 ， 还 可 指 「 年 老 的 」 或 「 老 人 」 ， 例 如 ： i saw an ancient basking in the sun （ 我 看 见 一 个 老 人 在 晒 太 阳 ） 。 telltale 即 「 显 示 事 实 的 」 ， 例 如 ： by the telltale blood on his hands, i knew he was the murderer （ 我 见 他 手 上 有 血 ， 知 道 他 就 是 凶 手 ） 。
