战 场 上 的 巧 克 力
during the second boer war one british company sent a tin of chocolate from queen victoria herself to each of her "dear, brave soldiers", each carrying the queen's portrait and bound with red, white and blue ribbon.
on one occasion, private james humphrey, of the 2nd royal lancaster regiment, credited the queen's chocolate tin with saving his life and asked that it be sent to the queen. "had the bullet not been stopped by the chocolate," a doctor testified, "it would undoubtedly have passed through this structure into the abdomen and have caused a fatal wound." sir arthur bigge, the principal medical officer, sent the tin of chocolate with the bullet still in it to the queen with a note saying, "your majesty would doubtless wish another tin to be sent to private humphrey."

第 二 次 布 尔 战 争 期 间 ， 英 国 一 家 公 司 代 维 多 利 亚 女 王 寄 赠 其 「 亲 爱 勇 敢 的 士 兵 」 每 人 一 罐 巧 克 力 。 罐 上 有 女 王 肖 像 ， 并 捆 红 、 白 、 蓝 缎 带 。
皇 家 兰 卡 斯 特 第 二 兵 团 有 个 二 等 兵 叫 詹 姆 斯 ． 韩 福 瑞 ， 曾 说 女 王 的 巧 克 力 罐 救 了 他 一 命 ， 要 求 把 罐 子 寄 到 御 前 。 有 医 生 作 证 说 ： 「 子 弹 要 不 是 被 巧 克 力 挡 住 ， 一 定 会 射 穿 罐 子 ， 进 入 腹 部 ， 伤 人 夺 命 。 」 医 务 主 任 亚 瑟 ． 比 格 爵 士 把 那 罐 巧 克 力 寄 上 女 王 ， 罐 还 留 那 颗 子 弹 ， 附 呈 字 条 说 ： 「 陛 下 无 疑 有 意 再 赠 二 等 士 兵 韩 福 瑞 巧 克 力 一 罐 。 」
【 附 注 】 两 次 布 尔 战 争 （ 1880-1902 ） 都 是 英 国 在 南 非 的 殖 民 地 战 争 。 private 是 阶 级 最 低 的 士 兵 ， 又 作 private soldier ， 简 写 是 pte ， 例 如 pte humphrey 。
