wellington served as commander of the british forces in the peninsular war between britain and france. as the war progressed, the soldiers of his army became adept at living off the country. on one occasion, wellington himself caught a soldier staggering along carrying a stolen beehive.
"hallo, sir, where did you get that beehive?" asked wellington.
the soldier obviously did not recognise his commander nor understand his question, for he replied, "the beehives, sir, are over that hill. but you had better hurry before they have all been taken."
威 灵 顿 在 英 、 法 半 岛 战 争 之 中 任 英 军 司 令 ， 其 间 他 麾 下 的 士 兵 渐 渐 精 通 取 之 于 民 用 之 于 我 。 有 一 次 ， 威 灵 顿 亲 自 碰 到 一 名 士 兵 偷 了 个 蜂 巢 ， 抱 在 路 上 走 ， 走 得 十 分 吃 力 。

威 灵 顿 问 ： 「 喂 ， 老 兄 ， 蜂 巢 是 哪 来 的 ？ 」
那士 兵 显 然 不 认 得 他 的 指 挥 官 ， 也 不 明 白 威 灵 顿 这 个 问 题 的 含 义 。 他 回 答 说 ： 「 老 兄， 蜂 巢 在 山 的 那 边 。 你 最 好 快 点 走 ， 迟 了 ， 恐 怕 都 被 拿 去 了 。 」
【 附 注 】 adept 是 「 精 通 」 或 「 熟 练 」 ， 其 后 习 惯 用 in 或 at 带 出 精 通 的 事 情 ， 例 如 ： he was adept in / at copywriting （ 他 擅 长 撰 写 广 告 ） 。 adept 也 可 用 来 形 容 技 巧， 例 如 ： his paintings are remarkable for the adept use of colours （ 他 的油 画 ， 色 彩 运 用 精 妙 ， 殊 足 称 道 ） 。
live off 指 「 靠 … … 过 活 」 ， 常 带 贬 义， 例 如 ： he lived off his wife all his life （ 他 一 生 都 靠 老 婆 养 活 ） 。 说 士兵 live off the country ， 是 指 靠 当 地 出 产 的 粮 食 过 活 。 本 文 的 live off 当 然 带「 非 法 取 得 粮 食 」 含 义 。
