习俗问题(英中对照)

古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。
习 俗 问 题
after the british defeated the zulus at kambula in 1879, colonel evelyn wood interrogated the prisoners. when he had obtained the information required, he said, "previously, we treated all your wounded men in our hospital. but when you attacked our camp, our black patients rose and helped to kill those who had been attending on them. can you advance any reason why i should not kill you?"
"there is a very good reason," said a young zulu with an intelligent face. "we kill you because it is the custom of the black men. but it isn't the white men's custom."
wood had no answer to this and had the men placed under guard before eventually freeing them.

一八 七 九 年 ， 英 军 在 坎 布 拉 击 败 祖 鲁 人 。 伊 夫 林 ． 伍 德 上 校 盘 问 俘 虏 ， 取 得 所 需 情 报之 后 说 ： 「 以 前 ， 我 们 把 你 们 受 伤 的 战 士 送 到 医 院 治 疗 ； 但 你 们 前 来 袭 击 ， 这 些 负伤 黑 人 却 助 你 们 一 臂 ， 把 照 料 他 们 的 人 杀 害 。 你 们 可 以 提 出 理 由 ， 说 我 不 该 把 你 们处 死 吗 ？ 」
一 个 样 子 伶 俐 的 祖 鲁 少 年 说 ： 「 有 一 个 很 好 的 理 由 ： 杀 死 敌 人 ， 是 黑 人 的 习 俗 ， 却 不 是 白 人 的 习 俗 。 」
伍 德 无 词 以 对 。 他 把 俘 虏 关 押 起 来 ， 最 后 把 他 们 放 了 。
【附 注 】 evelyn 是 个 男 女 都 可 以 用 的 名 字 ， 但 今 天 男 人 叫 evelyn 的 很 少 。 attend on 即 「 照 顾 」 或 「 看 护 」 ， 例 如 ： she had enough responsibility at home attending on her sick mother （ 她 在 家 照 顾 患 病 的 母 亲 ， 责 任 已 经 很 重 ） 。
