古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。

the hon george townshend, a british soldier who reached the rank of field marshal, had a reputation for coolness under fire during the seven years war (1756-63), which ranged britain, prussia and hanover against france, austria and russia. on one occasion, a german officer, standing next to him, had his head blown to pieces by an exploding shell. townshend was splattered with gore. however, he merely took out his handkerchief and started wiping his uniform, muttering as he did so, "i never suspected that scheiger had so many brains."
乔治 ． 汤 森 爵 士 是 个 英 国 军 人 ， 屡 迁 至 陆 军 元 帅 。 英 国 、 普 鲁 士 、 汉 诺 威 和 法 国 、 奥地 利 、 俄 国 七 年 战 争 （ 1756-63 ） 期 间 ， 汤 森 以 无 惧 炮 火 头 脑 冷 静 知 名 。 有 一 次 ，站 在 他 身 旁 的 一 名 德 意 志 军 官 被 炮 弹 炸 碎 脑 袋 ， 鲜 血 溅 了 汤 森 一 身 。 他 拿 出 手 帕 ，把 军 服 上 的 血 揩 去 ， 同 时 喃 喃 自 语 ： 「 想 不 到 沙 伊 格 尔 还 有 点 头 脑 。 」

【 附 注 】 德 意 志 十 九 世 纪 统 一 之 前 ， 分 为 普 鲁 士 、 汉 诺 威 等 多 个 王 国 。 七 年 战 争 影 响 深 远 ： 英 国 藉 这 次 战 争 ， 夺 取 了 法 国 殖 民 地 加 拿 大 ； 普 鲁 士 也 遏 止 了 奥 地 利 主 宰 德 意 志 的 野 心 。
gore 指 淋 漓 鲜 血 ， 特 别 是 暴 力 事 件 中 流 的 血 ， 形 容 词 是 gory ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） the high-principled lawyer was all covered in gore after being attacked by the three thugs （ 那 位 正 直 的 律 师 被 三 个 恶 棍 袭 击 之 后 ， 浑 身 鲜 血 ） 。 （ 2 ） waterloo was a gory battle in which tens of thousands were killed （ 滑 铁卢 战 役 血 流 成 河 ， 死 者 以 万 计 ） 。
