some renaissance popes were not known for their learning. vasari, in his "life of michelangelo" has a good story which is typical of the martial christianity of that period.
pope julius Ⅱ went one day to see a statue of himself which michelangelo was executing. the right hand of the statue was raised in a dignified attitude, and the artist consulted the pope as to whether he should place a book in the left. "put a sword into it," said julius, "or of letters i know but little." this was the pope who was said to have thrown into the tiber the keys of st peter, with a declaration that he would thenceforth use the sword of st paul.

文 艺 复 兴 期 间 ， 有 些 皇 不 以 学 识 鸣 世 。 瓦 萨 里 的 《 米 开 兰 基 罗 传 》 记 载 了 一 个 有 趣 故 事 ， 很 能 代 表 那 个 时 期 好 战 的 基 督 。
有 一 天 ， 皇 尤 利 乌 斯 二 世 去 看 米 开 兰 基 罗 正 为 他 制 作 的 雕 像 ， 雕 像 右 手 很 威 严 的 举 起 。 米 开 兰 基 罗 和 皇 商 量 ， 问 左 手 拿 一 本 书 好 不 好 。 尤 利 乌 斯 说 ： 「 拿 一 把 剑 吧 。 我 对 文 学 没 有 什 么 认 识 。 」 据 说 这 位 皇 把 圣 彼 得 的 钥 匙 抛 了 进 台 伯 河 ， 声 言 此 后 会 用 圣 保 罗 的 剑 。
【 附 注 】 米 开 兰 基 罗 （ 1475-1564 ） 就 是 着 名 雕 像 大 （ david ） 的 作 者 ， 瓦 萨 里 （ 1475-1574 ） 所 着 《 伟 大 画 家 、 雕 刻 家 、 建 筑 师 传 》 （ lives of the most excellent painters, sculptors, and architects ） 则 开 西 方 艺 术 史 研 究 先 河 。
of letters i know but little 的 letters 即 「 文 学 」 ， 指 「 文 学 」 的 letters 必 须 用 复 数 形 式 ， 例 如 「 文 人 」 是 a man of letters ， 「 文 学 界 」 是 the world of letters 。
