colonel william stiles, commander of a georgia regiment in the american civil war, noticed a soldier dropping out and hiding behind a tree during a charge. he crept up on the soldier and struck him a hard blow on the back with the flat of his sword, shouting, “ you coward! ” the soldier, feeling that he had been struck by an enemy shot, clasped his hands and fell over backwards, crying, “ lord, receive my spirit! ” stiles kicked him in the ribs and said, “ get up, the lord wouldn't receive the spirit of a coward. ” the soldier leapt to his feet rejoicing. “ ain't i killed? the lord be praised. ” he then grabbed his musket and joined the attack, apparently cured of his cowardice.

美 国 南 北 战 争 期 间 ， 威 廉 ． 斯 泰 尔 斯 上 校 指 挥 乔 治 亚 州 一 个 军 团 ， 有 一 次 下 令 冲 锋 ， 发 觉 一 名 士 兵 脱 离 大 队 ， 躲 在 树 后 。 他 悄 悄 走 到 那 士 兵 身 后 ， 用 剑 的 平 面 大 力 一 击 他 背 部 ， 高 叫 ： 「 懦 夫 ！ 」 那 士 兵 一 痛 ， 以 为 被 敌 人 子 弹 击 中 ， 两 手 十 指 交 扣 ， 往 后 便 倒 ， 同 时 喊 道 ： 「 天 主 啊 ， 接 受 我 的 灵 魂 吧 ！ 」 斯 泰 尔 斯 一 脚 踢 向 他 胸 口 ， 说 ： 「 起 来 ， 天 主 不 会 接 受 懦 夫 的 灵 魂 。 」 那 士 兵 跳 起 来 ， 高 兴 不 已 。 「 我 没 有 死 吗 ？ 感 谢 天 主 ！ 」 他 抓 起 步 枪 ， 和 同 袍 一 起 冲 锋 ， 怯 懦 之 情 似 乎 一 扫 而 空 。
【 附 注 】 creep up on 是 动 词 片 语 （ phrasal verb ） ， 指 「 悄 悄 走 到 … … 身 后 」 ， 例 如 ： i saw the cat creeping up on the mouse （ 我 看 见 那 只 猫 悄 悄 走 到 老 鼠 身 后 ） 。 ain't 即 am not 、 is not 或 are not ， 一 般 只 见 于 缺 乏 育 的 人 口 中 。
