fraternisation during the peninsular war was very common. in 1813 a french lady was curious to get a sight of the british redcoats. unexpectedly, her pet poodle jumped out of her arms, ran towards the british lines, and crouched by an officer, captain cooke, when it reached the enemy position. seeing that the lady was distraught at the loss of her prized pet, the captain ordered one of his men to take the little dog back. she was overjoyed and rewarded the redcoat with a goblet of wine, which he drank with relish. he then touched his cap and left, smoking a pipe piled high with tobacco given to him by the french soldiers.

半 岛 战 争 期 间 ， 敌 对 双 方 常 见 交 好 。 一 八 一 三 年 ， 一 名 法 国 女 士 好 奇 ， 想 看 看 英 兵 ， 抱 的 狮 子 狗 忽 然 跳 到 地 上 ， 向 英 军 跑 去 ， 到 达 敌 阵 ， 即 蹲 在 一 个 叫 库 克 的 上 尉 脚 下 。 库 克 上 尉 见 那 女 士 失 去 爱 犬 苦 恼 不 堪 ， 即 差 遣 一 名 手 下 把 小 狗 送 还 。 那 女 士 高 兴 极 了 ， 奉 酒 一 杯 ， 那 英 兵 喝 得 津 津 有 味 。 喝 后 ， 他 举 手 触 帽 致 意 ， 转 身 离 去 ， 嘴 叼 烟 斗 ， 斗 内 盛 满 烟 草 ， 由 法 军 赠 与 。
【 解 说 】 「 半 岛 战 争 」 指 一 八 ○ 八 至 一 八 一 四 年 英 国 、 西 班 牙 联 军 对 付 拿 破 仑 ， 「 半 岛 」 即 西 班 牙 、 葡 萄 牙 所 在 的 爱 比 利 亚 半 岛 （ iberian peninsula ） 。
fraternisation 是 「 和 敌 国 的 人 交 好 」 。 fraternal 本 义 是 「 兄 弟 的 」 ， 例 如 fraternal love 是 「 兄 弟 之 情 」 。 fraternise 即 「 结 兄 弟 之 交 」 ， 常 指 和 敌 国 亲 善 ， 例 如 ： she was shot for fraternising with an enemy soldier （ 她 由 于 和 敌 方 一 名 士 兵 交 好 ， 被 枪 决 了 ） 。
