In 1812, US President James Madison declared war on Britain, for which he was condemned by many Americans. In the course of the war, British troops occupied Washington, and the president's wife, Dolly Madison, fled from the White House, hoping to meet her husband up the Potomac. En route she stopped off at a farmhouse. She went upstairs while her attendants announced her presence to the housewife. Enraged, the woman ran up the stairs and shouted, "Mrs Madison, get out. Your husband has got mine out fighting and damn you you shan't stay in my house. So get out!"
Dolly went. In the distance the White House was burning.
一 八 一 二 年 ， 美 国 总 统 麦 迪 生 向 英 国 宣 战 ， 引 起 不 少 美 国 人 抨 击 。 战 争 期 间 ， 英 军 攻 占 华 盛 顿 ， 总 统 夫 人 多 莉 ． 麦 迪 生 逃 离 白 宫 ， 准 备 沿 波 多 马 克 河 而 上 ， 和 丈 夫 会 合 。 她 途 中 见 到 一 家 农 舍 ， 就 走 到 楼 上 歇 息 ， 由 侍 从 通 知 女 户 主 。 那 女 人 勃 然 大 怒 ， 跑 到 楼 上 喝 道 ： 「 麦 迪 生 太 太 ， 快 滚 。 你 老 公 要 我 老 公 离 家 上 战 场 ， 你 妈 的 可 不 能 在 我 家 逗 留 ， 滚 吧 ！ 」
多 莉 于 是 离 去 ， 远 处 白 宫 在 焚 烧 。

【 解 说 】 麦 迪 生 向 英 宣 战 的 原 因 之 一 ， 是 英 国 为 了 抵 制 拿 破 仑 ， 干 涉 美 国 船 运 。
