the end of the american civil war saw many returning confederate soldiers unable to find employment. a kindhearted farmer in virginia offered to supply work to any of robert lee's veterans. he divided them into squads according to their military rank.
a neighbour enquired of him one day, “ who are those working over there? ” “ them is privates. very fine men, first-rate workers. ”
“ and who are those in that second group? ” “ them is lieutenants and captains. they work quite well, but not so well as the privates. ”
“ i see you have a third squad. who are they? ” “ them is the colonels, ” replied the farmer.

“ and how do the colonels work? ” “ well, i won't say anything against a man who fought under bobby lee. but i tell you, i ain't gonna hire me no generals. ”
美 国 内 战 结 束 ， 退 伍 南 军 不 少 都 找 不 到 工 作 。 维 吉 尼 亚 州 一 位 善 心 农 场 主 人 答 应 雇 用 罗 勃 特 ． 李 的 部 下 ， 并 按 军 阶 分 为 小 组 。
有 一 天 ， 邻 居 问 他 ： 「 那 边 工 作 的 人 是 谁 ？ 」 「 是 二 等 兵 ， 他 们 很 不 错 ， 工 作 十 分 出 色 。 」
「 另 一 组 的 是 甚 么 人 ？ 」 「 他 们 是 中 尉 、 上 尉 ， 工 作 也 很 不 错 ， 只 是 不 如 二 等 兵 。 」
「 我 见 你 还 有 第 三 组 人 ， 他 们 是 谁 ？ 」 农 场 主 人 回 答 说 ： 「 他 们 是 上 校 。 」
「 上 校 工 作 怎 样 ？ 」 「 嗯 ， 凡 是 罗 勃 特 ． 李 手 下 的 战 士 ， 我 都 不 会 批 评 。 但 我 告 诉 你 ， 我 是 不 会 聘 请 将 军 级 工 人 了 。 」
