古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。
国 王 和 公 民
the clash of philosophies involved in the french revolutionary wars was marked. to the other peoples of europe the new french ideas of liberty, equality and fraternity were difficult to grasp. on one occasion the king of prussia, frederick william ii, noted a grenadier of a french volunteer battalion who, though wounded and left alone, still stuck to the defence of a bridge. by the king's orders the man was taken prisoner and brought to him. "frenchman, you're a brave fellow," said the king. "what a pity you're not fighting for a better cause." the volunteer was equal to the occasion. "citizen william," he said, "we shall not agree on that point. let's talk about something else." his words pleased the prussian army and the king when passing along the tents of his men often heard himself called "citizen william".

法国 大 革 命 战 争 之 中 ， 思 想 的 冲 突 十 分 明 显 。 欧 洲 其 他 民 族 难 以 理 解 法 国 人 自 由 、 平等 、 友 爱 的 新 观 念 。 有 一 次 ， 普 鲁 士 国 王 腓 特 烈 ． 威 廉 二 世 看 见 法 国 志 愿 步 兵 营 一位 掷 弹 兵 负 伤 独 自 留 了 下 来 ， 却 还 坚 守 一 座 桥 ， 他 下 令 把 这 位 伤 兵 活 捉 带 到 面 前 ， 对 他 说 ： 「 法 国 人 ， 你 很 勇 敢 ， 可 惜 不是 为 较 高 尚 的 理 想 作 战 。 」 那 志 愿 兵 没 有 示 弱 ， 回 答 说 ： 「 威 廉 公 民 ， 我 们 对 这 一点 不 可 能 话 得 投 机 ， 还 是 谈 其 他 事 情 吧 。 」 普 鲁 士 军 队 很 喜 欢 这 段 话 ， 后 来 国 王 走过 军 营 ， 常 常 听 见 部 下 叫 他 做 「 威 廉 公 民 」 。
【 附 注 】 法 国 大 革 命 爆 发 之 后 ， 普 鲁 士 曾 出 兵 征 讨 ， 无 功 而 退 。 留 意 be equal to 一 词 是 「 能 应 付 」 的 意 思 ， 例 如 ： is he equal to the task? （ 他 能 胜任 吗 ？ ）
