古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。
李 将 军 轶 事
at the battle of gettysburg, which constituted the turning-point in the us civil war, a federal soldier had his left leg shattered by a ball. as he lay on the ground, he saw general lee, commander of the confederates, ordered his retreat. a most bitter anti-southman, the soldier taunted the general as he rode near, and shouted, "hurrah for the union ! "
the soldier gave an account of what happened afterwards : "the general stopped, dismounted, and came towards me. i at first thought he meant to kill me. but as he came up he looked down at me with such a sad expression upon his face that all fear left me. he extended his hand to me, and grasping mine firmly, said, 'my son, i hope you will soon be well.' "

盖 茨 堡 战 役 是 美 国 南 北 战 争 的 转 捩 点 。 战 役 ， 北 军 一 名 士 兵 左 腿 被 弹 丸 打 碎 ， 躺 在 地 上 ， 看 南 军 司 令 李 将 军 下 令 撤 退 。 这 士 兵 恨 南 人 入 骨 ， 见 李 将 军 骑 马 走 近 ， 就 出 言 相 讥 ， 高 叫 ： 「 北 方 联 邦 万 岁 ！ 」
这 士 兵 纪 录 了 其 后 的 事 ： 「 李 将 军 停 下 来 ， 下 马 朝 我 走 近 。 最 初 ， 我 以 为 他 要 杀 我 ， 但 他 走 到 我 身 旁 ， 低 头 望 我 ， 那 忧 伤 神 情 把 我 心 中 恐 惧 完 全 驱 散 。 他 伸 出 手 ， 紧 紧 把 我 的 手 握 住 ， 说 ： 『 孩 子 ， 希 望 你 可 以 早 点 复 元 。 』 」
【 附 注 】 一 八 六 三 年 盖 茨 堡 战 役 是 南 军 败 北 的 先 声 。 李 将 军 一 八 六 五 年 二 月 受命 为 南 军 总 司 令 ， 到 四 月 向 北 军 投 降 ， 战 后 任 华 盛 顿 学 院 院 长 。 学 院 后 改 名 为 「 华盛 顿 与 李 大 学 」 （ washington and lee university ） 。
