教皇和独裁者(英中对照)

古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。

no one ever accused mussolini of being subtle. when struggling for power, he used revolvers, clubs, and daggers to make his political points. the archbishop of milan did not like this, and spoke out against the activities of mussolini ’ s fascists. mussolini saw no point in arguing about it. instead, he stopped a man on the street and paid him ten lire to deliver a package to the archbishop.
fortunately the time bomb in the package failed to go off. the archbishop went on to become pope pius xi. mussolini went on to become dictator of italy.
没有人会说墨索里尼行事阴柔。他斗争夺权期间，常用左轮手枪、大棍、匕首等实现其政治主张。米兰大主教对此十分不满，出言抨击墨索里尼手下法西斯党人的行径。墨索里尼懒得跟他辩论，就在街上截住一个行人，给他十里拉，叫他送个包裹与米兰大主教。

幸而包裹的计时炸弹没有爆炸。后来，那位大主教成为教皇庇护十一世，墨索里尼则成为意大利独裁者。
【解说】fascism（法西斯主义）一字出自拉丁文fasces。fasces是古罗马政要的权杖，以多根小棍束在一起，中间是一把战斧。墨索里尼一九一九年开始宣扬其fascism，fasces后来更成为法西斯党党徽。法西斯党本来是极右组织，但极右、极左看似殊途，其实同归独裁。所以，一九九一年八月，苏联极左派发动政变软禁戈尔巴乔夫，莫斯科百姓就走到街上高喊：notofascism!（不要法西斯主义！）
