古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。
学 校 和 监 狱
adlai stevenson, us delegate to the united nations, visited dallas, texas, in 1963. he was met by a jeering crowd of demonstrators. the crowd got a bit out of hand. a woman hit stevenson on his head with a placard, and a man struck him across the cheek.
the police were ready to arrest the two demonstrators on charges of assault, but stevenson said no. he did not want them punished. as he commented later, “ i didn't want them to go to jail. i thought it would be better if they went to school. ”
美 国 驻 联 合 国 代 表 阿 德 莱 ． 史 蒂 文 生 一 九 六 三 年 往 访 德 州 达 拉 斯 市 ， 一 群 示 威 者 迎 他 嘲 骂 。 群 众 有 点 失 控 。 一 个 女 人 用 示 威 牌 打 中 史 蒂 文 生 头 颅 ， 一 个 男 人 还 打 了 他 一 记 耳 光 。
警 察 要 拘 捕 那 两 名 示 威 者 ， 控 以 袭 击 他 人 罪 ， 但 被 史 蒂 文 生 阻 止 。 史 蒂 文 生 不想 那 两 人 受 到 惩 罚 。 他 后 来 说 ： 「 我 不 想 送 他 们 入 狱 ； 我 想 ， 送 他 们 上 学 会 好 一 点。 」

【 解 说 】 史 蒂 文 生 曾 两 度 竞 选 美 国 总 统 ， 均 告 失 败 。 他 在 达 拉 斯 遇 袭 之 后 一 个 月 ， 美 国 总 统 甘 乃 迪 即 在 达 拉 斯 遇 袭 身 亡 。
留 意 上 文 want 字 的 用 法 。 want 带 出 的 主 动 语 态 （ active voice ） 动 词 ， 必须 冠 以 to ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） i didn't want them to go to jail 。 （ 2 ） he wanted to punish them 。 但 是 ， want 带 出 的 被 动 语 态 （ passive voice ） 动 词， 则 可 把 to 字 略 去 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） i didn't want them (to be) sent to prison 。 （ 2 ） he did not want them (to be) punished 。
