古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。
马铃薯歼灭战
in april 1943, the uss o'bannon spotted a japanese submarine on patrol off the solomon islands. the american crew shot off the sub's conning tower, preventing it from diving, but the sub quickly closed in so that the o'bannon's big guns could not hit it. when the japanese sailors came topside to fight, the o'bannon's unprepared crewmen hammered them with ─ potatoes. thinking that they were grenades, the japanese panicked, dropped their guns, tried to submerge the sub, and sank into oblivion.
一九四三年四月，在所罗门群岛附近，美国船奥班农号发现一艘日本潜艇在巡逻，开火轰掉潜艇的瞭望塔，使它不能潜航。但潜艇迅速逼近，奥班农号的大炮即无法向它射击。

潜艇上的水兵走到甲板上，只待厮杀；奥班农号船员未有准备，奋起击敌，纷纷掷出──马铃薯。日本水兵以为是手榴弹，慌张失措，抛下枪就要把潜水艇潜入水，终于沉进了万古的寂灭之中。
【 解 说 】 oblivion 是 「 湮 没 」 或 「 被 完 全 忘 却 」 的 情 况 ， sink / pass / fall into oblivion 是 说 「 为 世 人 忘 却 」 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） he is a writer fallen into oblivion （ 他 是 一 个 读 者 已 经 遗 忘 的 作 家 ） 。 （ 2 ） his writings have sunk into oblivion （ 他 的 着 作 已 湮 没 无 闻 ） 。 上 文 说 那 日 本 潜 艇 sank into oblivion ， 当 然 是 指 人 艇 一 起 灭 亡 。
oblivion 也 可 指 「 对 周 围 事 物 毫 不 留 意 」 的 状 况 ， 例 如 ： he stood there in total oblivion （ 他 心 不 在 焉 的 站 ） 。
