in 1880, when afghanstan was trying to repel british invasion, a british force was virtually wiped out at maiwand. a mongrel dog named bobbie, the property of one of the dead british soldiers, found his way back to regimental headquarters. when the rest of the regiment returned to england, bobbie went with them to be presented with the afghan medal by queen victoria herself. unfortunately, bobbie did not survive his master for long, being run over and killed by a hansom.
一八八○年，阿富汗力拒英国入侵，梅万一役把一队英军杀得几乎片甲不留。一名阵亡英军有只杂种狗叫巴比，觅路回到军团总部，后来军团返国，巴比和其将士一起晋见维多利亚女王，获女王亲自颁授阿富汗勋章。可惜巴比不久也跟主人去了：牠被一辆出租二轮马车撞倒，一命呜呼。

survive一般解作「生存」，例 如 ： eating moon cakes is one of the ancient chinese customs that survive in hong kong today （ 吃 月 饼 是 香 港 现存 的 一 个 旧 中 国 习 俗 ） 。 不 过 ， tom survives mary 或 mary is survived by tom 是 说 「 玛 丽 先 汤 姆 而 死 」 ， 可 不 要 误 解 作 「 汤 姆 救 活 了 玛 丽 」 之 类 。 survive 作 及物 动 词 （ transitive verb ， 即 必 须 和 受 词 〈 object 〉 连 用 ） ， 意 思 是 「 活 得 较 … … 久 」 或 「 经 历 了 … … 而 仍 然 生 存 」 ， 例 如 ： he survived the earthquake （地 震 没 有 夺 去 他 的 性 命 ） 。
