皮拉斯式胜利
a courageous general, pyrrhus was enlisted by the greeks in southern itay to counter the increasingly powerful romans. in 279 bc, his invading forces defeated the romans at the battle of asculum. however, the engagement was costly: he lost many men, and all of his baggage. when one of his soldiers congratulated him on his victory, pyrrhus famously replied: "another such victory and we are ruined."
皮拉斯是位勇武的将领，义大利南部希腊人因此请他对抗方兴未艾的罗马。公元前二七九年，在奥斯库卢姆之役中，帅师进侵的皮拉斯击溃了罗马军队，但那是惨胜：希腊将士伤亡枕藉，辎重尽失。皮拉斯一名手下贺他捷歌得奏，他的回答脍炙人口：「再有一次这样的胜利，我们就完了。」

【解说】古希腊这个故事，成为英文成语pyrrhicvictory，即得不偿失的胜利。the boxer's defeat of his opponent proved to be a pyrrhic victory: he was so badly punched that shortly afterwards he suffered a heart attack and died 即 「 那 拳 师 打 败 了 对 手 ， 但 那 是 惨 胜 ： 他 吃 了 对 手 重 拳 ， 不 久 就 心 脏 病 发 ， 一 命 呜 呼 」 。
engagement 一 字 ， 读 者 大 概 都 知 道 可 解 作 「 订 婚 」 、 「 约 会 」 或 「 定 了 要 办 的 事 」 ； 较 少 见 的 一 个 意 思 是 「 交 战 」 。 动 词 engage 也 可 指 「 交 战 」 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） i engaged him in single combat （ 我 和 他 单 打 独 斗 ） ， （ 2 ） a bloody engagement ended in disaster on the japanese side （ 一 场 血 战 ， 日 寇 大 败 ） 。
