古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。

on 27 july 1830, the famed french historian jules michelet was lecturing at the ecole normale when his words were interrupted by the sounds of cannon fire in the distance, marking the start of the aptly named july revolution which ousted the autocratic charles x from power and ushered in the constitutional monarchy of louis philippe.
michelet turned to his excited students. "gentlemen, they are making history," he declared. "we shall write it."
一八三○年七月二十七日，着名法国历史学家朱尔斯．米舍莱在师范学院讲课，远处突然传来炮声，打断了他的说话。名副其实的七月革命开始了，独裁的查理十世被逐下台，由立宪君主路易．菲力普取代。

米舍莱转身对兴奋的学生说：「各位，他们在创造历史，我们要把这段历史纪录下来。」
【附 注 】 留 意 in the distance 和 at a distance 的 分 别 。 in the distance 是 「 在远 处 」 ， at a distance 则 是 「 在 一 段 距 离 之 外 」 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） we watched the crocodiles at a safe distance （ 我 们 在 安 全 的 距 离 看 那 些 鳄 鱼 ） 。 （ 2 ） the strayed traveller took heart when he saw a column of smoke in the distance （ 那 迷 途 的 行 人 见 到 远 处 长 烟 升 起 ， 心 情 振 奋 ） 。
make history 是 「 创 造 历 史 」 ， 即 做 一 些 历 史 上 的 大 事 ， 例 如 ： alexander graham bell made history when he invented the telephone （ 亚 历 山 大 ． 格 雷 姆 ． 贝 尔 发 明 电 话， 翻 开 了 历 史 新 的 一 页 ） 。
