In 1937, an undeclared war was being fought between Chinese and Japanese soldiers in Shanghai. Chiang Kai-shek's crack 88th Division held Chapei for 75 days before retiring. However, a remnant of the Division, about 500 men, held out in the Joint Savings Godown just across the Soochow Creek from the International Settlement. The Chinese officer in command refused a British offer to permit the Chinese detachment to enter the International Settlement, saying that he had no orders to withdraw.Completely surrounded by Japanese soldiers, the Chinese held the godown for four days. Then, leaving their dead behind, they swam across the creek, carrying their wounded, much to the chagrin of the Japanese.
