louisⅥ of france, surnamed the fat, was one who combined the soldier and the humorist in his own person. continuing his father's policy of opposing the english in normandy, he was almost continuously at war with henryⅠ of england. though not always successful, he was always brave.
at the battle of bonneville in 1119, louis led a small body of cavalry against an english force. an english warrior took hold of the bridle of his horse, and cried,"the king is taken!""no, sir," replied louis,"a king is never taken, not even at chess." he raised his battle axe, and rising in his stirrups cut down the vaunting foe.

though the battle was a decisive win for the english, maupassant contends that their victory was somewhat muted as louis had the best bon mot on the battlefield that day.
