黑社会的贡献
war can make for strange bedfellows. during world war ii, the us government struck a secret deal with a sicilian-born american mobster: charles luciano, who was serving a 30-year jail term. his help was sought in providing mafia assistance to counter possible axis infiltration on us waterfronts, and his connections in italy and sicily were tapped to furnish intelligence and ensure an easy passage for us forces involved in the italian campaign from 1943 to 1945. in return for his cooperation, luciano was permitted to run his crime empire unhindered from his jail cell.
in 1946, despite a huge public outcry, luciano was paroled on condition that he depart the us and return to sicily. a reward, perhaps, to a man whose contribution the government could not officially recognise.

战争可以造就不可思议的联盟。第二次世界大战期间，美国政府就和歹徒查尔斯．卢恰诺订立秘密合作协议。卢恰诺生于西西里，后来成为美国公民。当时正在狱中，刑期是三十年。当局要他调动黑手党，协助防止轴心国的力量渗透美国口岸。一九四三年到四五年，美军参与意大利战役，当局又利用卢恰诺和意大利、西西里两地黑道的关系，搜集情报，务求行军顺利。卢恰诺得到的报酬，是可以在囚室里继续经营其罪恶王国，不受干扰。
一九四六年，卢恰诺获得假释，条件是必须离开美国，返回西西里，一时举国哗然。但美国政府既不能正式承认卢恰诺的贡献，大概也只能这样投桃报李。
