on 5 september 1862, confederate general robert lee invaded the north. it was a critical time in american history. a decisive victory on lee's part could mean the south winning the civil war.
chasing lee was union general george mcclellan. on 13 september, while bivouacked in a field that had the day before been occupied by confederates, a union private found in the grass three cigars wrapped in a piece of paper. he divided the cigars among his comrades, and then took a causal glance at the paper. it was nothing less than a copy of lee's battle plan for the invasion, which had been dropped by some unknown officer.
"here is a paper with which if i cannot whip bobby lee i will be willing to go home," said mcclellan. he went on the attack and the confederates were turned back.

麦克莱伦将军说:「有了这分文件,我不能把罗伯特.李打得落花流水,甘愿归隐老家。」他挥兵进攻,击退了南军。
