in 1942, the normandie dock of st nazaire in german-occupied france was the only atlantic seaboard facility capable of taking in any large german warship. so the british developed a most daring plan to destroy the heavily defended dock.
under the plan, an old destroyer, hms campbeltown was loaded with 4.5 tons of high explosive in the bows. on 26 march 1942, the destroyer, escorted by 18 shallow draft boats, set sail, and at 1:30 am on 28 march rammed into the st nazaire lock gates and was blown up. about 200 royal commandos disembarked under heavy fire and destroyed other dock structures. all but 27 of them were killed or captured.
despite the heavy casualties, the raid was judged to be highly successful. the dock remained unusable until 1947.
