at 4.00 am on 22 june 1941, joseph stalin, absolute ruler of the soviet union, was woken and told by his aides that huge numbers of german troops had started to pour over the soviet border an hour earlier.
stalin was taken by surprise. he had been aware of the german troop build-up on the soviet union's western border, but he had put his faith in the non-aggression pact he had struck with hitler before the outbreak of war in europe. under the terms of this pact, the soviet union had even dutifully supplied germany with raw materials such as cotton, oil, wood, and metals. the last trainload of grain had crossed the border barely an hour before the germans mounted their attack.

on hearing of the invasion, stalin took refuge in his dacha to consider his response. several days passed before he finally emerged to give a radio broadcast exhorting the people to rise up against the invaders.
一九四一年六月二十二日凌晨四时，苏联独裁者约瑟夫．斯大林的助手把他叫醒，告诉他说：一小时之前，德国军队开始大举犯边。
斯大林完全没有准备。他虽然早就知道德军在苏联西陲云集，但欧战爆发之前，他和希特勒签署了互不侵犯条约，以为可以放心。苏联更恪守条约规定，向德国供应棉花、石油、木材、金属等原料。德军入侵苏联之前一小时，苏联还有一列火车满载谷物开入德国。
斯大林听到德军犯境消息之后，躲进他的别墅里，思量对策，过了几天才走出来，上电台呼吁百姓挺身对抗侵略者。
