on 25 october 1944, when the americans were trying to reconquer the philippines, the destroyer uss johnston and a handful of lights ships spotted the approach of a huge japanese fleet off samar. ernest evans, the johnston's skipper, headed directly towards the enemy, and told his crew over the intercom:"this will be a fight from which survival cannot be expected."
after inflicting heavy losses on the enemy, the johnston was reduced to a complete wreck by gunfire. but when evans saw a japanese cruiser began pounding on the uss gambier bay, he gave the following order:"commence firing on that cruiser, draw her fire on us and away from the gambier bay."
a survivor saw a japanese captain salute the johnston as she went down. of her crew of 327, more than 180 were lost, including evans.
一九四四年十月二十五日,美军着手夺回菲律宾期间,美国驱逐舰约翰斯顿号和几艘轻型战舰在萨马岛附近发现有一支庞大日本舰队逼近。约翰斯顿号舰长厄尼斯特.埃文斯马上趋前迎战,并在通信系统上告诉手下:「这一战,不能指望生还。」
约翰斯顿号使日军受创不轻,但本身也被炮火打得残破不堪。这时,埃文斯看见一艘日本巡洋舰对美舰甘比尔号展开猛裂轰击,就下令说:「向那艘巡洋舰开火,把他们攻击甘比尔号的炮火引到我们这边。」
约翰斯顿号沉没时,一名生还者看见日军一个舰长向他们致敬。约翰斯顿号三百二十七名船员之中,超过一百八十人丧生,包括埃文斯。
