拿破仑轶事(英中对照)

古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。
拿 破 仑 轶 事
in 1799, napoleon's troops, travelling through the desert en route to syria, made the mistake of slaking their thirst with leech-infested water. when the leeches affixed themselves to the insides of their noses and throats, hundreds of soldiers died of blood loss and suffocation.
in 1812, in order to finance his invasion of russia, napoleon set up a factory in paris to produce a unique product to be "traded" for military supplies. the product was -- counterfeit money.
一 七 九 九 年 ， 拿 破 仑 军 队 往 利 亚 途 中 ， 行 经 沙 漠 ， 犯 了 一 个 错 误 ： 以 水 蛭 蕃 滋 的 水 解 渴 。 水 蛭 黏 附 在 他 们 鼻 子 、 咽 喉 内 ， 士 兵 因 失 血 、 窒 息 而 死 者 数 以 百 计 。

一 八 一 二 年 ， 拿 破 仑 为 解 决 进 侵 俄 国 的 军 费 问 题 ， 在 巴 黎 开 办 工 厂 ， 生 产 一 种 特 别 制 品 以 换 取 军 需 。 那 制 品 是 ─ ─ 伪 币 。
【附 注 】 en route 原 是 法 文 ， 等 于 英 文 on the way ， 例 如 ： the plane stops in sydney en route from auckland to hong kong （ 飞 机 由 奥 克 兰 飞 香 港 ， 途 中 在悉 尼 停 留 ） 。 由 于 是 外 文 ， en route 印 刷 时 一 般 用 斜 体 。
slake 一 字 并 不 常用 ， 多 见 于 文 学 作 品 ， 指 「 解 渴 」 或 「 满 足 欲 望 」 ， 例 如 ： nothing could slake her craving for money （ 她 求 财 的 欲 望 是 无 法 满 足 的 ） 。 「 解 渴 」 除 了 说 slake one's thirst ， 还 可 说 quench one's thirst ， 例 如 ： you can't quench / slake your thirst with seawater （ 海 水 不 能 解 渴 ） 。 至 于 「 充 饥 」 ， 则 不 能 说 slake 或 quench ， 动 词 应 用 satisfy ， 例 如 ： an enormous meal satisfied his hunger （ 一 顿 大 餐 把 他 吃 饱 了 ） 。
