a traffic problem existed in the narrow, twisted streets of paris even in the days before the french revolution. it was the custom for society ladies of the time to chauffeur their own carriages, and not even king louis xvi dared risk their displeasure by forbidding them to drive. summoning one of his shrewdest ministers, count d'argenson, the king asked him whether he could diplomatically unsnarl the traffic jams.
"of course," said count d'argenson. "i will simply promulgate this law: ladies under thirty years of age are forbidden to drive."
即 使 是 法 国大 革 命 之 前 ， 巴 黎 狭 窄 而 弯 弯 曲 曲 的 道 路 已 有 交 通 问 题 。 当 时 上 流 社 会 妇 女 都 习 惯驾 驶 自 己 的 马 车 ， 连 国 王 路 易 十 六 都 不 敢 冒 犯 群 雌 颁 令 禁 止 。 他 召 来 手 下 一 位 十 分精 明 的 大 臣 阿 尔 让 松 伯 爵 ， 问 他 有 没 有 办 法 圆 滑 的 解 决 交 通 阻 塞 。

阿 尔 让 松 伯 爵 说 ： 「 当 然 有 办 法 。 我 只 须 颁 布 一 条 法 例 ： 三 十 岁 以 下 妇 女 ， 不 得 驾 驶 马 车 。 」
【附 注 】 society 一 般 指 「 社 会 」 ， 但 也 可 以 指 上 流 社 会 ， 即 high society ， 例 如： （ 1 ） at sixteen, she made her debut in (high) society （ 她 十 六 岁 初 次出 席 上 流 社 会 场 合 ） 。 （ 2 ） the society wedding between the actress and the tycoon's son attracted much media attention （ 那 女 演 员 和 大 亨 儿 子 的 豪门 婚 礼 ， 获 传 播 界 大 肆 报 道 ） 。
