in 1809, sir benjamin bathurst, britain's envoy to the court of the austro-hungarian empire in vienna, helped rebuild the alliance between britain and austria against napoleon.
while returning to britain by coach in november 1809, bathurst stopped for dinner at an inn in the prussian town of perleberg. upon finishing the meal, he and his assistants returned to their waiting coach. bathurst went forward to check the horses. having examined the animals on the nearside, he stepped around to inspect those on the other side, and promptly disappeared.
bathurst was never seen again, and napoleon denied allegations that bathurst had been abducted by his agents.

一 八 ○ 九 年 十 一 月 ， 巴 瑟 斯 特 乘 马 车 回 国 途 中 ， 在 普 鲁 士 培 乐 贝 格 市 一 家 客 栈 吃 晚 饭 ， 饭 后 和 助 手 一 起 ， 回 到 停 等 候 的 马 车 。 巴 瑟 斯 特 走 上 前 检 视 马 匹 。 看 过 左 边 之 后 ， 他 转 过 去 看 另 一 边 的 马 ， 随 即 消 失 得 无 影 无 踪 。
从 此 没 有 人 再 见 过 巴 瑟 斯 特 。 拿 破 仑 否 认 巴 瑟 斯 特 是 被 他 的 特 工 掳 走 。
【附 注 】 nearside 直 译 是 「 靠 近 的 一 边 」 ， 即 车 辆 、 马 匹 靠 近 人 行 道 的 一 边 ； 在 英国 ， 那 是 左 边 ， 所 以 nearside 指 车 、 马 的 左 侧 ， offside （ 在 外 的 一 边 ） 则 指 车、 马 的 右 侧 ， 例 如 ： the nearside headlight was broken （ 右 边 车 前 灯 打 破 了 ）。
