in 632 ad, the kingdom of gwynedd in north wales went to war with the kingdom of northumbria in northeast england. in a bid to ensure that he could tell his men apart from the enemy during battle, king caedwalla of gwynedd issued a curious order.
the order? that his soldiers wear leeks attached to their helmets!
caedwalla was victorious, and the leek became the national emblem of wales.
公元 六 三 二 年 ， 威 尔 斯 北 部 的 格 温 内 思 王 国 和 英 格 兰 东 北 部 的 诺 森 布 利 亚 王 国 作 战 ，格 温 内 思 国 王 卡 德 瓦 拉 为 免 两 军 交 战 难 以 识 别 ， 下 了 一 个 古 怪 命 令 。

命 令 是 格 温 内 思 将 士 头 盔 上 须 系 一 把 韭 菜 。
卡 德 瓦 拉 战 胜 了 。 韭 菜 后 来 成 为 威 尔 斯 国 徽 。
【附 注 】 bid 可 解 作 「 努 力 」 或 「 企 图 」 ， 常 见 于 in a bid to do something 、 make a bid to do something 这 两 个 说 法 ， 例 如 ： disguised as a cripple, the beggar made a bid for sympathy / the beggar disguised himself as a cripple in a bid to win sympathy （ 那 乞 丐 扮 作 跛 子 ， 博 取 同 情 ） 。
the order? that his soldiers wear leeks 这 两 句 ， 动 词 为 什 么 不 用 过 去 式 wore ？按 这 两 句 其 实 等 于 the order was that his soldiers should wear leeks ， 其 中 should 字 可 以 略 去 。 这 不 妨 多 举 一 例 ： hitler gave orders that all jews （ should ） be killed （ 希特 勒 下 令 杀 死 所 有 犹 太 人 ） 。 动 词 order 之 后 假 如 用 that 子 句 （ clause ） ， 往 往也 略 去 should 字 ， 例 如 ： hitler ordered that all jews （ should ） be killed 。
