古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。

british country squire john peard first met the legendary italian patriot giuseppe garibaldi on the field of battle. during their introduction, a movement in the austrian lines attracted peard's attention. "pardon me, but there's a devil of an austrian over there who's catching my eye," he declared.
he then insouciantly raised his rifle and fired a shot. every member of garibaldi's entourage trained his field glasses on the austrian, who took a few stumbling paces before falling face down in the dirt.
peard nodded with satisfaction and held out his hand to garibaldi: "good day, general."

英 国 乡 绅 约 翰 ． 皮 尔 德 和 义 大 利 着 名 爱 国 者 朱 塞 佩 ． 加 里 波 底 初 次 相 逢 ， 是 在 战 场 上 。 两 人 在 介 绍 认 识 时 ， 奥 地 利 军 队 阵 营 有 些 异 动 ， 引 起 皮 尔 德 注 意 。 他 说 ： 「 对 不 起 ， 但 我 觉 得 那 边 有 个 混 帐 的 奥 地 利 人 很 碍 眼 。 」

【 附 注 】 十 八 世 纪 初 ， 义 大 利 并 未 统 一 ， 疆 土 不 少 更 被 奥 地 利 占 领 。 一 八 六 ○ 年 ， 加 里 波 底 率 领 义 军 把 奥 地 利 人 逐 出 西 西 里 岛 和 南 义 大 利 ， 成 为 统 一 国 家 的 功 臣 。
