古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。

as financial secretary to the treasury, stanley baldwin was alarmed by the size of the british debt arising from world war i. in 1919, he wrote an anonymous letter to the times urging the wealthy to impose a voluntary tax upon themselves to help relieve the burden. estimating the value of his own estate at some £ 580000, baldwin invested £ 150000 in government war-loan stock - certificates which he then destroyed, thus rendering the purchase a gift to the treasury.
the rich, perhaps unsurprisingly, did not rush to follow baldwin's noble example.

也 许 并 不 奇 怪 的 ， 是 富 有 者 并 不 热 心 仿 效 包 尔 文 的 崇 高 榜 样 。
【 附 注 】 包 尔 文 一 九 二 三 至 三 七 年 间 三 任 英 国 首 相 ， 其 间 对 希 特 勒 、 墨 索 里 尼 姑 息 忍 让 ， 终 于 蚁 穴 溃 堤 ， 巨 浸 稽 天 。
wealthy 和 rich 一 样 ， 都 是 指 「 富 有 」 ， 可 以 通 用 ， 例 如 ： he was born into a rich / wealthy family （ 他 生 于 富 裕 之 家 ） 。 但 rich 有 时 带 贬 义 ， 例 如 ： he is materially rich, but spiritually poor （ 他 物 质 上 富 有 ， 精 神 上 却 很 贫 乏 ） 。 filthy rich / stinking rich （ 铜 臭 熏 天 ） 、 nouveau riche （ 暴 发 户 ） 等 都 不 是 褒 词 。
