小 小 军 人 要 回 家
during the american civil war, both armies included many youngsters, often aged twelve or less. a tiny drummer boy captured by the confederates was walking a short distance behind a large party of prisoners and trying to keep up when a kind-hearted private, james hodham, saw him and said to him, "look here, you are too little to be a prisoner; so pitch that drum into that fence-corner, throw off your coat, get behind those bushes and go home as fast as you can."
"mister, don't you want me for a prisoner?" "no."
"can i go where i please?" "yes."

"then you bet i'm going home to my mother!" saying this as he threw his drum one way and his coat another and became, in appearance, a civilian, the boy disappeared behind some bushes.
美 国 内 战 期 间 ， 双 方 军 队 都 有 不 少 小 伙 子 ， 年 纪 往 往 不 过 十 二 岁 。 一 个 小 鼓 手 被 南 军 俘 虏 了 ， 随 一 大 群 战 俘 走 ， 落 后 了 一 点 ， 正 努 力 赶 上 。 善 心 的 二 等 兵 詹 姆 斯 ． 霍 德 姆 看 见 ， 对他 说 ： 「 喂 ， 你 年 纪 太 小 ， 不 应 该 做 俘 虏 。 把 军 鼓 掉 到 篱 笆 角 ， 军 衣 抛 掉 ， 跑 到 那些 灌 木 后 ， 尽 快 回 家 去 吧 。 」
「 先 生 ， 你 不 想 我 做 俘 虏 吗 ？ 」 「 不 想 。 」
「 我 去 哪 都 可 以 吗 ？ 」 「 不 错 。 」
「 那 么 ， 我 当 然 是 回 家 去 找 妈 妈 ！ 」 那 孩 子 一 面 说 ， 一 面 把 军 鼓 抛 到 一 边 ， 军 衣 掉 到 另 一 边 ， 样 子 就 和 一 般 平 民 无 二 ， 躲 到 灌 木 中 逃 去 了 。
【 附 注 】 you bet 是 「 当 然 」 ， 是 俚 语 用 法 ， 例 如 ： "do you want to go?" "you bet （ i do ） ." （ 「 你 想 去 吗 ？ 」 「 当 然 想 。 」 ）
