§71 为二妇丧其两目喻
(71) the man who turned blind
昔有一人，聘取二妇。若近其一，为一所嗔。不能裁断，便在二妇中间，正身仰卧。值天大雨，屋舍淋漏，水土俱下，堕其眼中。以先有要，不敢起避，遂令二目俱失其明。
once upon a time, there was a man who had two wives. whenever he was with one of them, the other got very angry. faced with such a dilemma, he decided one night to lie flat on the back between the two. it happened that it was raining so heavily that their house began to have a leak. water and mud fell into his eyes, but he dared not get up and run away, due to the decision he had taken before. finally he became completely blind.
世间凡夫亦复如是。亲近邪友，习行非法，造作结业，堕三恶道，长处生死，丧智慧眼。如彼愚夫，为其二妇故，二眼俱失。
this is also held to be true with the common people of the world. by keeping bad company and doing unlawful deeds, people create karmas and fall into the three evil paths of transmigration. not only will they remain in the round of existences forever, but also lose their eyes of wisdom, just like the stupid man who turned blind.

白话：
　　从前有一个人娶了两位妻子，若是亲近其中的一位，另一位就生气了，决断不下，便在两位妻子中间直端端地仰卧着。正值天下大雨，屋舍淋漏，水土俱下，堕落在他的眼中。因先有约定的缘故，不敢起身躲避，便使得双目都失明了。
　　世间的凡夫也是这样，亲近坏朋友，习行非法的事，迷惑了身心，造作出恶业，堕于三恶道中，长处生死轮回，丧失掉慧眼，就好像那个愚人，为了两个妻子的缘故，使双目都失明了。
源流：
　　《经律异相》卷四十四引《十卷譬喻经》卷三：昔有一人作两业，有二妇。适诣小妇，小妇语言：「我年少，婿年老，我不乐住，可往大妇处作居。」其婿拔去白发。适至大妇处，大妇语言：「我年老，头已白。婿头黑，宜去。」于是拔黑作白，如是不止，头遂秃尽。二妇恶之，便各舍去，坐愁致死。过去世时，作寺中狗。水东一寺，水西一寺。闻犍搥鸣，狗便往得食。后日两寺同时鸣磬，狗浮水欲渡，适欲至西，复恐东寺食好；向东，复恐西寺食好。如是犹豫，溺死水中。（《大正藏》第五十三册第二三一页）
